Blaines Dermatitis Information

Dermatitis is an inflammatory condition of the skin, also known as eczema. There are many forms of dermatitis and it is one of the most common conditions in today's society.

Not life threatening or contagious

Dermatitis affects both males and females equally and although more common in children it can affect any age. It is not life threatening or contagious but often leads to social and emotional insecurities.

Dermatitis can appear anywhere on the body and the type of dermatitis will often determine its location.

  • · Contact dermatitis most commonly affects the hands and is the result of a sensitivity to elements the skin comes in contact with.
  • · Seborrhoeic dermatitis affects the scalp. In babies it is known as cradle cap and in adults a form of dandruff.
  • · Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of dermatitis affecting one in five children and can occur anywhere on the body but is most common on the face, trunk and skin folds - behind the knees and elbows.
  • · Stasis dermatitis affects the lower legs usually of the elderly and is due to impeded circulation. It may be accompanied by chronic ulceration.
  • · Perioral dermatitis affects the mouth area and is usually due to an irritation caused by contact with foods or dribbling in young children.

A dry, red, itchy rash

Regardless of its location dermatitis is characteristically a dry, red rash, often scaly and almost always itchy. In fact the itch is the most distinguishing feature of dermatitis.

Mild dermatitis can often be treated with out doctor consultation by moisturizing the skin, using over the counter emollients to alleviate the inflammation and itching and by avoiding known irritants.

A doctor consultation should be sought if:

  • The rash becomes painful or extremely itchy and is causing loss of sleep or concentration.
  • If the excessive scratching has caused the skin to break in which case there is a risk of infection.
  • It is unclear if the rash is dermatitis or another form of skin condition.
  • Lack of success with self help measures, so the condition can be brought under control and life made more comfortable.
