Blaines Nevi Information

Nevi, more commonly called moles, are a growth on the skin due to a cluster of the pigment cells, melanocytes. Their correct medical name is melanocytic nevi and they are the most common growths in humans.

A nevus is similar to a freckle

A nevus (singular for nevi) generally starts as a flat brown spot, similar to a freckle. Over time it may grow in size and become elevated with hairs growing from it.

Nevi can appear anywhere on the body and vary in size and shape. Their color may also vary from pink flesh tones to dark brown or black.

Nevi change throughout life

The appearance of nevi will alter throughout childhood and pregnancy. They will darken with sun exposure and often fade during adulthood. They may even disappear in old age.

Nevi can develop at any age but more commonly in childhood. Approximately one percent of all babies are actually born with nevi. Nevi present at birth are called congenital pigmented nevi and may be small marks or large blemishes covering most of the body.

Some nevi are cancerous

Some moles have a tendency of turning into malignant melanomas, a serious and potentially life threatening form of cancer. Malignant melanomas appear as harmless moles but are actually a cancerous growth occurring in the melanocytes. Changes in the appearance of moles or the development of new moles in adulthood should be assessed by a dermatologist to ensure they are not cancerous.

Moles are generally harmless

In general moles are harmless and do not require medical attention. However it is advisable to have moles checked by a medical practitioner on a regular basis to ensure they are still harmless. If a mole changes appearance, bleeds or grows rapidly it should also be checked for cancer. If malignant it will need to be removed. Removal of moles is generally carried out by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Other instances where nevi may be removed include nuisance moles where the nevi is in such a location that it is irritated by clothing, combs or razors, or if they are unsightly, in which case their removal is considered cosmetic.
